What does it mean to be an AML-TN Graduate Trainee? This page serves as a guide for what to expect as a member of our program.

Trainee Expectations

Please note: these deliverables are not intended to be a significant burden on top of an already rigorous graduate degree. Keeping in mind that your primary responsibility is your academics, each of these deliverables is designed to add a manageable workload while adding significant value to your UBC degree. Please look through our ‘program‘ page, for additional information.

All Graduate level trainees are expected to accomplish the following deliverables by the end of their degree:

All Graduate level trainees are expected to complete the following deliverables once per year, throughout their degree:

  • Submission of their Individual Development Plan (IDP)
  • Lead one session of reading group activities 
  • Participate in the ‘Research Practices in ML Workshop’ and Annual Hackathon (pending funding) 

Research Mobility Program

AML-TN support

  • Financial support: $4k per research stay for travel, accommodation, etc.
  • Leveraging global network: Relationships with all institutions on the ‘Mobility Partners’ page. Any institutions not on this page should be approved. 
  • In order to organize your research stay, please fill out one of our Mobility Claim Forms (found here)

Host institution expectations

  • In-kind support: Expected to include office space, computing resources, administrative facilitation, access to meetings/seminars, etc.
  • Supervision by hosting faculty: Students should be working directly with faculty researchers from the host institution, for greater exposure, guidance, and to build relationships
  • Length of time should be at least around one month to ensure meaningful collaboration; dates are up to the student/supervisor/host. For funded trainees, this visit need not be in the funded year.

Associate or Funded Trainee

Associate and Funded Trainees are both exposed to the full offerings of our program, with the same expectations regarding deliverables. Funded trainees are additionally supported with 1 year of stipend support, at the base level set by UBC’s Computer Science department.
